/ investigation on new functionalities and intelligence implanted in textiles

In the near future, almost the present, textiles will offer functionalities different from those they currently give. Important advances in fabric investigation and nanotechnology will make it possible for comfort and protection to be substantially improved. Technical professional clothing will be the first area to benefit.

What it is

The ITURRI Group, under the name of the INFINITEX Project, leads a consortium made up of 15 companies and 11 technological centres which investigates a new generation of technical textiles with the support and participation of the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

These companies represent all parts of the textile industry, from the fiber through to the tailoring and include companies from technological sectors which will also interact with the textile sector in the future.

Aim

To develop solutions focused on current needs and to generate new applications in the short and medium term through:

  • Investigation of new applications and functionalities
  • Detection of needs
  • Fundamental investigation
  • Conceptual and applied investigation
  • Development of fabrics
  • Development of textile architectures

Developments

The Project has a global Budget of 30 Million Euro, which currently allows for 29 lines of investigation to be open. These are distributed in 5 general work packages:

1. Electronic textiles

Textiles which incorporate functionalisms of electric-electronic elements such as sensors, signal transportation or heating

2. Active textiles

Those which respond in a foreseeable way to certain external stimuli such as heat or electric current

3. Comfort textiles

Through the use of new materials and technologies we aim to optimise the comfort associated with many fabrics

4. Protection textiles

Mainly orientated towards the military sector, where protection against threats and detection elements are required

5. Textiles for health

Textiles which interact with our organism providing beneficial substances depending on the moment and needs, or interacting with other external agents eliminating them or impeding their development.

Applied functionalities

  • Heating performances
  • Sensor performances
  • Lighting performances
  • Dispensing of active substances performances
  • Extra lightness with important mechanic features
  • Integration of electric circuits
  • Adaptive camouflage

Timetable

Approved at the end of 2009, the Project has a duration of 40 months, until December 2012.
